Wanderlust :Day Five

June 20th, 2008

Sorry for all of the posts at once; both time and internet access are scarce here in the Wanderlust bubble. Speaking of, all the words and pictures in the world couldn’t convey this experience, but I’ll try to give you the bare bones of it.

For the first time since leaving my room in the little blue house in Lubbock, I am keeping to a steady schedule. Wake up call is at 7am, although I get up an hour earlier to write these posts and have a bit of precious time to myself. We make breakfast (oatmeal, cereal, coffee and bagels), and head off to the bathrooms to change into our ever stylish and dirty bike shorts and jerseys. We pack up the tents, the food and dishes, and stretch our achy and groaning muscles on colorful yoga mats, which we’ve found attract bees in certain campsites! After copiously applying sunscreen and chamois butter (google it) and stuffing all of our bags into the van, we set off on our bikes at about 10am.

We’ve been biking anywhere from 40 to 65 miles a day, stopping every ten miles or so to eat a snack and drink a lot of water. We also stop for ice cream, thrift stores, post offices, and, yesterday, an auction for 51 acres of North Carolina forest. Some riders thought the mass of people and huge pickup trucks was a party, others figured it was a funeral – turns out it was a bunch of good ol’ southern boys drinking and working at the same time.

We are now at the local McDonald’s Wi-Fi hotspot, posting all of our blogs and other things we need to do on the internet. This is a short one, but we are headed to Chapel Hill today and going to a Hog Fest during our day off tomorrow, so if the internet goddess smiles down upon us, there will be another one soon. We also have a brand new post up at Wanderlust With Rhonda, so check it out!
